McClanahan Builders not only repairs damaged masonry but also suggest ways to get at the source of the damage which saves you time, money, and headaches in the long-run.  The weather in the Central Illinois is hard on masonry structures! Driving rains and repeated freeze/thaw temperature swings wreak havoc with the integrity of your building.   Over time damaged mortar joints will most likely lead to water problems and possible structural damage to your home. Tuck-pointing is the repair of aged and damaged mortar joints.

Do you have eroded, cracked or missing mortar between the bricks, stones, or concrete blocks in your building? Do your walls look uneven, tippy or wavy? Do you have a whitish powder or cloudiness on the wall a few days after a rain or winter thaw? Is interior drywall or plaster soft and powdery? Is the paint on your walls peeling or flaking away? Do your windows and doors appear to be pushed out of alignment or hard to open? If so, then your structure may be in need of immediate masonry restoration work.

Our work increases the beauty, maximizes the energy efficiency, and improves the value of your building.

Tuckpointing (or tuck pointing) is a process in which two different colors of mortar (usually contrasting / one matching the brick color) are used to create an illusion that a fine joint has been formed between the bricks. Basically, that brick color matching mortar fills the joint and the contrasting mortar (thinner line) is added on top. This is a technique requiring the most skilled tradesman.

Pointing refers to an external / visible part of a mortar joint; it is the mortar line you see between the bricks, stones, blocks, etc.

Re-pointing is a process of removing old, deteriorating mortar from between the bricks, stones, or blocks, and replacing it with new mortar mix.
